The Bowflex Max Trainer M5 Review
The Max Trainer M5 is about 70% stair-stepper, 25% elliptical, and it is an incredible workout. I think it’s the most appealing home-exercise machines I’ve ever seen, and it can give you a solid workout. Not to mention it can connect to your smartphone and you can see your workouts on an app. However, there are certain things about the design I don’t like.
It’s a beautiful machine with red trim and a big fan at the base of it that is quiet but will drown out the noise around you as you pedal faster!
It looks like that after you get it assembled, of course. The parts are labeled and the manual is well written, which makes for a somewhat easy assembly. However, it will take you at least an hour. After you have it assembled you can put it pretty much anywhere since it’s compact, but it has a pretty short power cord. You could either put it next to a wall or you will have to use an extension cord.
Pros vs Cons
- Easy assembly, but takes time
- It is pretty compact, and can fit ALMOST anywhere
- Big pedals
- Bluetooth’s workouts to an app through your phone, providing your average heart rate and calories burned
- Resistance goes up to 16
- Has 8 created workouts, including the 14 minute workout
- The fan can be a LITTLE loud if you are going really hard
- You have to push down on a side to get it going
- Short cord
- Only connect to Apple and Android devices
- Pedals – They are 15 inches from the floor, very big and can fit any foot size.
- Control Panel – Sits in the center right in front of you
- Digital Display Speedometer – Sits behind the control panel.
Lean heavily on the higher pedal to get it started, because the motors that keep the resistance do’t help you startup the machine. There is a cup-holder that sits further back behind the speedometer towards the front of the machine, which can be hard to reach for some people. However, there is a lip on the display where a tablet or phone can sit during your workout, but it can also block the information. It would have been a better idea to combine the control panel and the display in one unit, and then have extra room for a device.
Will it Provide the Great 14 Minute Workout it Claims to?
Bowflex claims the Max Trainer M5 will give you a powerful 14 minute workout where you can burn 2.5 times the calories of an elliptical, and 1.5 times the calories of a treadmill. So if you are looking for something that burns calories the fasted then this is the machine for you. Burning calories is what you want to do, you just have to make sure you burn fat calories by eating healthy.
Using the Bowflex’s Max Trainer app you can look at your completed workout stats, because the machine uploads them to the app. It gives you a summary of your accomplishments and gives you your average heart rate, calories burned, etc.
Doing a workout in just 14 minutes is great when you don’t have a lot of time in the day, or before or after work. It has some interval training where you go as hard as you can for 30 seconds, then slow down and recover for 90 seconds. Repeat that about 7 times and you’re done.
I suggest you do a little warm up before you start the 14 minute workout (by hitting the MAX button), because it makes you start at top speed.
The M5 has seven other workouts to choose from, as well as a manual option. It has resistance levels of up to 16, so it can cater to any exercise type (beginner or professional). However, there are some things you cannot customize on the created workouts, like session time.
The machine can Bluetooth your workout information to your Apple or Android device through the Bowflex’s Max Trainer app, so you can see a summary of your average heart rate, calories burned, etc. Unfortunately, it only connects with Apple and Android devices!
There is no doubt you will get a great workout with the Bowflex Max Trainer M5, and you will be surprised at how often you begin to use it!
