Does Stress Cause Weight Gain?

Many people have high stress jobs or just a bad day, and workout to help relieve their stress, which can be good or might be bad. But does stress cause weight gain? Well this post is going to answer that question, and many others about stress!

Stress and Weight Gain

Sad Stress

So does stress cause weight gain? The truth is some people do tend to gain weight when under stress. There is a hormone that your body produces when you wake up in the morning called cortisol, and when you stress excessively your adrenal glands can produce a lot more cortisol than your body needs. Cortisol levels can remain elevated in the body when a person is chronically stressed, which can contribute to weight gain.

It stimulates fat and carbohydrate metabolism for fast energy, and the end result of this is an increase in appetite. So chronic stress, or poorly managed stress, may lead to difficulty losing those unwanted pounds.

Not only does it promote weight gain, but it can also affect where you put on the weight. Elevated cortisol tends to cause fat storage in the abdominal area rather than in the hips, which can contribute to cardiovascular disease, including heart attack and stroke.

However, one cannot predict that your stress will result in high cortisol levels. The amount of cortisol released in response to stress can vary among different people, because some are more reactive than others. Women who tend to stress and produce high levels of cortisol also tended to eat more than women who stress and don’t produce as much cortisol. And some women who store their fat in the abdominal area have higher cortisol levels, as opposed to women who store their fat in their hips.

Stress Management is a Crucial Part of Weight Loss

Weight Loss

Exercise is the best and fastest way to lose weight if you are stressed. Endorphins (something your body produces during a workout) tend to fight your stress and can lower cortisol levels. Yoga can also help lower your stress hormone levels. To effectively reduce elevated cortisol due to stress, lifestyle changes are essential.

However, you also want to make sure you are not highly stressed when you are working out because it can put more stress on your body. You want to workout when your stress level is low or moderate so that you will burn more fat and not store it as you exercise.

Also, a lot of stress is caused by how you specifically perceive it. If you are pessimistic and think the world is going to stop turning every time something goes wrong, then you will have higher stress levels. If you are optimistic and always think that everything will work out, then you will have lower stress levels.

What Can Help With Stress and Cortisol?

There is a supplement that can help balance your cortisol levels called Relora. It Relorawill help you maintain a healthy amount of cortisol in your system. It works WONDERS!

There is also one that improves adrenal function post chronic stress called Cortrex (your adrenal glands can get tired from producing so much cortisol). If you are already past a state of chronic stress then you need to take this. Your adrenal glands need to rest!

Final Thought

If you are trying to lose weight and you have high stress levels, you need to manage it by working out at the right times, thinking positively, and supplementing it. Managing it will make you and your family happier!

  1. Hi there Karissa,

I totally agree with you. For me, stress didn’t just cause me to gain weight, but it made me a very unhappy person too. When you keep using food to feed the negative thoughts, they don’t really get digested very well. They turn your body into negative energy and make you feel very lazy as a result.

I have gone passed that stage since embracing Yoga four years ago. I don’t struggle with weight issue anymore and I’ve become more conscious at what I eat. Definitely feeling much happier and healthier.

  2. Hi, I really enjoyed reading about the stress level causing weight gain. However I know more people who have the tendency to lose weight rather than gain it when they are under stress, but as you said, this depends from person. I guess it must be very hard for people who are forced to live with stress because of their job and exercising might be a very good solution for them.

  3. Wow, the ugly truth really sucks sometimes. It should work in a way that when you get stressed out, your body loses fat so you get happy again! (haha)
I really could use some stress management myself. I know it does so much harm to the body and mind.
I’m going to look into these supplements. How much is the test?

    1. The test is $265.. But you can use an FSA or HSA heathy insurance account to pay for it, and your insurance could also reimburse you!

If you were to get it done at a doctors office it would be WAY more expensive for your insurance.

A lot of stress is how you perceive it, so it is always good to SMILE, LAUGH, HUG, and stay positive 🙂
