The Garmin Forerunner 225 is the first Garmin GPS running watch that monitors your heart rate from your wrist. Now you have the option to run without a strap!

A colorful gauge shows your heart rate zones and beats per minute at a glance: warm-up (gray), easy (blue), aerobic (green), threshold (orange) or maximum (red).

You can create customized workouts or download free training plans at Garmin Connect, and get coach-like guidance. The 225 offers vibration alerts and a built-in accelerometer to record distance for treadmill workouts. Connected features include automatic uploads to Garmin Connect, live tracking and social media sharing.

Pros vs Cons


Pros:

  1. Takes heart rate from the wrist
  2. Great for running
  3. Measures distance and time
  4. Vibrates when you have been inactive for too long
  5. Measures sleep and counts steps
  6. Can download workouts through the app

Cons:

  1. The Garmin Connect app has had some issues
  2. It can be difficult to learn how to use at first (but don’t give up because it is worth it)

While the manual frequently lists change commands starting with the “menu” command, there is no guidance as to how you get to “menu”. There are 2 methods to get there. First try pressing 3 until you get back to the home screen, which lists “menu” at the bottom of that screen. If that doesn’t work, it means your watch is in the locked mode and you must first push button 2 to unlock it. Once unlocked, button 3 will return you to the start screen and you can than reach “menu” by selecting the down arrow with button 2.

Support and Warranty


The support for Garmin products is very good from what I have experienced. They will help you as best as they can, but sometimes you could get the short end of the stick depending on the representative. You can see the full warranty for all Garmin products here.

  1. I’ve been looking in to the fitness trackers for a few days now. I began a walking regimen this past spring with my German Shepherd and it has morphed in to a walk/run hybrid. I always said that I wouldn’t run unless something scary was chasing me… But here I am a few months later, looking into fitness trackers so I can improve my time and track my heart rate. I really do appreciate the review. You’ve helped me narrow down my choices:) so, thanks for that!

  2. Hi,I recently bought a fitbit which measures from the wrist and its currently being questioned about its accuracy in court.

    Do you know how accurate it is? I know Garmin have been big players in heart rate monitoring for a long time and pioneered quite alot.

    is it just for running or could i use it for the gym aswell

    1. I agree and think the FitBit HR is not as accurate as the Garmin watches. You can use this watch to run, swim, bike, etc, and you can use it outside or in the gym when you are lifting weights. But there are also more basic Garmin watches like the VivoFit 2 (there is an ad for it on the right if you want to look at it on amazon). It does everything this one does except it does not have GPS and you have to buy a HR strap separately.

      There are straps on my Heart Rate Monitors page. The Schoche can be worn on the wrist or forearm and can sync with all Garmin watches.

      I have this Garmin 225 and I use it all the time, no matter what I am doing!

  3. Very cool product here. I have never tried wearing a Garmin watch before. I have only seen Garmin making GPS products for cars.

    Your review is very neat and well put together. It highlights important features without going into too much content. Do you know if it is water-resistant? And how robust are Garmin products? Do they last long through wear and tear?

    1. Yes they are all water resistant, and they are very durable. They last a long time because you can recharge them. I absolutely love mine!!
